Construite en 1101, l'Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud avait pour but d'accueillir un ordre ouvert tant aux hommes qu'aux femmes et de toutes conditions. En 1189 elle devint nécropole royale en accueillant les sépultures d'Henri II, Alienor d'Aquitaine et Richard Coeur de Lion. 7 siècles plus tard, la Révolution fait son oeuvre, tout le monde est chassé et Napoléon la transformera en prison accueillant jusqu'à 2.000 prisionniers. c'est en 1975 qu'elle est reprise en main et entièrement restaurée. 
Cet édifice magnifique à tout point de vue comprend la fameuse Abbatiale où sont les "gisants" de la famille royale des Plantagenêts avec sa nef aux 100 chapîteaux sculptés; le Cloître rectangulaire servant pour la déambulation des religieuses; la splendide salle capitulaire et ses peintures du XVIè... et les étonnantes cuisines au style byzantin, aux formes octogonales et à la toiture hérissée de cheminées en "écaille de poisson", peut-être pour la production de saumon fumé, très nombreux dans la Loire à cette époque.

  Built in 1101, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud aimed at welcoming an order opened both to the men as to the women and from all conditions. This magnificent building in any point of view includes the famous Abbey church where are the "recumbent effigies" of the royal family of Plantagenêts with her 100 chapîteaux sculptured nave; the rectangular Convent serving for the wandering of the nuns; the magnificent chapter room and its paintings of the XVIè and the surprising kitchens in the Byzantine style, in the octagonal forms and the roof with fireplaces in "fish scale", maybe for the production of smoked salmon, very numerous in the Loire at that time.
