Although one of the flagships of modern technology -the TGV- runs past the grounds, and even though, on a clear day, clouds of vapour from the nuclear power station in Gravelines can be seen in the distance, one can still experience a profound communion with nature in Ruminghem, situated near the Eperlecques forest. And if, sooner or later, you have the opportunity to play here, you are more than likely to encounter the odd roe deer roaming with confidence on the 16th hole of the
course, which was designed by Bill Baker and completed in 1992.
And speaking of confidence…here the player needs to have total confidence in his swing as the eight holes in the forested section are scarcely tolerant of inaccuracy. It cannot be said that the fairways are narrow but the double curtain of trees is impressive and, in addition to its psychological impact, provides few opportunities to recover from one's
mistakes. However, this does not prevent the player from pitting his skills against a number of interesting challenges, such as, for example, on the par-4 15th, a downhill, right-handed dog-leg hole on which a good player can practically reach the green in one stroke… if he manages to clear the foliage!
The ten flat holes -laid out on a plateau overlooking the rest of the course- do not present the same level of difficulty as changes in the relief of the terrain are rare, but the contrast with the forest is such that one tends to lose one's bearings, and more so with the odd tract of undulating ground that disrupt one's line of sight. Water hazards -not too penalizing- complete the "menu" on five of the holes.
As for the bunkers: the Dutch owner of the course describes them as "English" (not Scottish!) as they are quite flat and do not present any great difficulty; the greens, which are downhill-sloping, fast and require careful negotiation, especially in the summer, he describes as "American".
Indeed, the Ruminghem Golf Club near Côte d'Opale is a course in a preserved nature of wood and drill.
