Je vous emmène dans une visite assez fantastique, celle de la crypte de l’église Saint Eutrope à Saintes entre Royan et Rochefort.
Eutrope aurait évangélisé la Saintonge au cours du 1er siècle de notre ère et serait mort martyrisé à Saintes. Très tôt, un culte se développe autour de son tombeau pour lequel on a édifié une importante église qui comprend une longue nef, un transept à absidioles orientées, un profond chœur. Celui-ci, réservé aux moines du prieuré, s'élève sur une vaste crypte qui accueille les reliques de Saint Eutrope. Les pèlerins peuvent accéder à la crypte en empruntant des escaliers aménagés dans la nef, située à mi-hauteur entre le chœur et la crypte.
Saintes étant traversé par un des chemins menant à Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, le sanctuaire devient une étape pour les pèlerins de Saint-Jacques.
La vaste crypte romane, où est disposé le tombeau et dont le plan n'a pas été altéré, est véritablement remarquable tant par sa dimensions que par son architecture. Il s’agit pratiquement d’une église sous l’église ! Elle comprend trois vaisseaux couverts de voûtes d'arêtes, un déambulatoire et trois chapelles rayonnantes. Les voûtes sont portées par de courts et puissants piliers à chapiteaux sculptés. Ceux-ci sont ornés de compositions végétales, à l'exception d'un chapiteau, décoré de têtes humaines. Les artistes romans sculptent des palmettes, des acanthes, des rinceaux...

Eutrope would have evangelized Saintonge during the 1st century and would have died tortured in Saintes. Very early, a cult develops around its grave for which we built an important church which includes a long nave, a transept with directed absidioles, a large choir. This one, reserved for the monks of the priory, rises on a vast crypt which welcomes saint Eutrope's relics. The pilgrims can reach the crypt by taking stairs fitted out in the nave, situated halfway up between the choir and the crypt.
Saintes being crossed by one of the ways leading to Santiago de Compostela, the sanctuary becomes a stage for the pilgrims of Saint Jacques.
The vast Romanic crypt, where is arranged the grave and the plan of which is original, is really remarkable both by her size and architecture. It is practically about a church under the church! She includes three vessels covered with cross vaults, an ambulatory and three chapels. Vaults are supported by short and powerful pillars with sculptured tops. These are decorated with vegetable compositions, with the exception of one, decorated with human heads. The Romanic artists sculpture palmettes, acanthuses, foliages...
